I recently created a tool to help you find your travel style and I want to break it down for you into simpler steps. The first step is deciding where you want to go. I tend to have the problem of having too long a list of places to go. Maybe that is your biggest challenge, too, or maybe not. Maybe you can’t even think of one place you want to go.
Luckily, there are tools for that. I have been trying out these three random generators and my favorite so far is Earth Roulette, which selected Haiti for me (awesome!) and includes links to look for cheap flights.
Travel Spin: https://travelsp.in/
Earth Roulette: https://earthroulette.com/
Random Lists: https://www.randomlists.com/vacations
The Random Lists vacations link will give you 12 random vacation destinations, but you can adjust the number down and you can try other Random List links to generate random countries, states, and cities.
If you already know 3-10 places you want to go, you may not need these tools.
Make your list
List up to ten places (cities, regions, countries) you would like to visit. If you aren’t sure, don’t worry. You can always change your mind later. Your selections can be a specific place, such as Disney World or Machu Picchu, a city or town, a state, country, or region. This is your personal travel bucket list and there are no right or wrong answers. You can go anywhere!
Here are some ideas if you are having trouble getting started:
Beginners
- I recommend being a tourist in your own town if you have no travel experience and/or you are nervous about planning and going on a trip. You probably don’t think of your town as an exciting place to visit, but every place has a unique history and something to enjoy. Plan your trip just as you would any other trip and stay in a hotel or Airbnb.
- If you already have some travel experience, you can try a short road trip around your state or region!
Intermediate
- Take a road trip out west
- Visit Canada (this can be a day trip if you live in Southeast Michigan)
- Go on a Caribbean or Alaskan cruise
Advanced
- Go abroad to a popular destination like Paris, Sydney, or London
- Go off the beaten path and save money by traveling to Central America, Southeast Asia, or Eastern Europe
- Take a round the world (RTW) trip
Go ahead and make your travel list! If you can only think of one place for now, don’t worry. That’s a great start. This is a work in progress.
Next time we will discuss different types of travel, like tours, cruises, solo travel, etc.
Where will you go next?
